What Is Premarin?

Premarin is a hormone replacement therapy drug that is typically used to treat the symptoms of menopause. It contains a mixture of hormones that can help relieve symptoms of menopause and is generally used to manage symptoms associated with endometriosis or endometrial hyperplasia (uterine thickening) in menopausal women.

How Does Premarin Work?

Premarin is a hormone replacement therapy drug that is a combination of two hormones: estradiol and progesterone. Estrogen helps control and regulate the body’s production of hormones, such as luteinizing hormone (LH) and estrogen.

To prevent estrogen from interacting with the uterus, the hormone estrogen is produced in the ovaries. In menopausal women, the production of estradiol is controlled by the estrogen receptors on the surface of the ovaries.

Premarin and Other Hormones

The primary hormones produced by the ovaries are progesterone and estradiol. These hormones are released during menopause and can also be released during the period of menopause. Progesterone is a female sex hormone that is responsible for maintaining the lining of the uterus. It is produced in the fallopian tubes, where it acts as a messenger in the body to help regulate the ovaries.

Premarin Dosage and Administration

Premarin is available in the strengths of 100, 150 and 200 mg tablets. The dosage will depend on the individual patient’s needs and response to the drug.

To prevent pregnancy, a doctor will recommend a course of medication, typically an injection every three months. Your doctor will discuss the specific dosage and how often you need to take it.

Premarin may be administered with food or on an empty stomach, as directed by your doctor. It is available as a liquid formulation in doses of 200 mg.

If you are being treated for endometriosis, a doctor may recommend a vaginal ring. This is typically inserted between the hours of 6-12 weeks of pregnancy.

If you have been pregnant for at least three months, your doctor will decide if you should continue to use the drug.

The dosage of Premarin will be determined by your doctor based on your medical history and other medications you are taking. Your doctor will discuss the pros and cons of each option with you.
